Grocers' Thanksgiving food displays not always best deals

TAMPA - As you do your Thanksgiving shopping, you might be tantalized by all the deals in those splashy holiday supermarket displays.

But, a little discretion could save you money.

The Tribune visited the big supermarket chains this week and found you can often find cheaper store-brand items on the supermarkets' regular shelves.

Tribune reporters fanned out across the Tampa Bay area this week to look at Thanksgiving displays at Publix, Sweetbay, Winn-Dixie, Wal-Mart Supercenter and Super Target. Generally, it didn't appear the grocery stores were trying to pull a fast one on shoppers.

There were some legitimate deals on hand, even if the less flashy store-brand items on the regular shelves were cheaper. National-brand items appear to have been marked down, and in many cases, supermarkets were offering buy-one-get-one-free deals on Thanksgiving staples.

Winn-Dixie, for example, offered a 14-ounce can of Swanson chicken broth for $1.25. You can get a second can for free if you have a Winn-Dixie membership card. It also offered a 4.7-ounce box of Betty Crocker scalloped potatoes for $1.99. Again, it's 2-for-1 if you have a Winn-Dixie card. Read more...
