We've compiled the best gifts to buy online and tips on how make sure you're getting the best deal
Electronics
Arguably the easiest to buy online, electronics tops our list for armchair shopping. Forget worrying about complicated sizing and colour options, when it comes to electronics, most people know what they want and it's just a matter of settling on the best features for the gift recipient. Enlist the help of a search engine to read reviews on the latest products and then comparison shop for the best deal. Though electronics stores are very competitive when it comes to price, it pays to shop around among well-known and trusted retailers.
Best bets: It's all about motion control in the gaming world this year with new features for the Nintendo Wii and the introduction of Xbox Kinect and Sony PlayStation Move vying your attention. You can't go wrong with a Smartphone: the Blackberry Torch and iPhone 4 are among the most popular on the market. (Don't overlook accessories as stocking stuffers!) And this could be the year of the 3D TV with Sony, Samsung, LG and other heavyweights offering exciting new options.
When you think of managing blood sugar, odds are you obsess over everything you can't have. While it's certainly important to limit no-no ingredients (like white, refined breads and pastas and fried, fatty, processed foods), it's just as crucial to pay attention to what you should eat. We suggest you start here.
Numerous nutrition and diabetes experts singled out these power foods because 1) they're packed with the 4 healthy nutrients (fiber, omega-3s, calcium, and vitamin D) that make up Prevention's Diabetes DTOUR Diet, and 2) they're exceptionally versatile, so you can use them in recipes, as add-ons to meals, or stand-alone snacks.
Lower your blood sugar and fight belly fat with this 5-week meal plan.
1. Beans
Beans have more to boast about than being high in fiber (plant compounds that help you feel full, steady blood sugar, and even lower cholesterol; a half cup of black beans delivers more than 7 grams). They're a not-too-shabby source of calcium, a mineral that research shows can help burn body fat. In ½ cup of white beans, you'll get almost 100 mg of calcium—about 10% of your daily intake. Beans also make an excellent protein source; unlike other proteins Americans commonly eat (such as red meat), beans are low in saturated fat—the kind that gunks up arteries and can lead to heart disease.

With Black Friday and Cyber Monday just around the corner, consumers are urged to beware of the most commons scams of the season.
To help you do that, McAfee, the Internet security firm, has revealed its "12 Scams of Christmas" -- the 12 most dangerous online scams that computer users should be cautious of this holiday season.
"Scams continue to be big business for cybercriminals who have their sights set on capitalizing on open hearts and wallets this holiday season," said Dave Marcus, director of security research for McAfee Labs. "As people jump online to look for deals on gifts and travel, it's important to recognize common scams to safeguard against theft during the busy season ahead."
Here, then, are McAfee's 12 scams of Christmas:
IPad offer scams. With Apple products topping many shopping lists this holiday season, scammers are busy distributing bogus offers for free iPads. In the spam version of the scam, consumers are asked to purchase other products and provide their credit card number to get the free iPad. Of course, victims never receive the iPad or the other items -- just the headache of reporting a stolen credit card number.
In the social media version of the scam, users take a quiz to win a free iPad and must supply their cell phone number to receive the results. In actuality they are signed up for a cell phone scam that costs $10 a week. Post continues after video.
"Help! I've been robbed" scam. This travel scam sends phony distress messages to family and friends requesting that money be wired or transferred so that the "victim" can get home. McAfee Labs says there's been an increase in this scam and predicts its rise during the busy travel season.
Fake gift cards. Cybercrooks use social media to promote fake gift card offers with the goal of stealing consumers' money and information, which is then sold to marketers or used for ID theft.
One recent Facebook scam offered a "free $1,000 Best Buy gift card" to the first 20,000 people who signed up for a Best Buy fan page, which was a look-alike. To apply for the gift card they had to provide personal information and take a series of quizzes.
Holiday job offers. As people seek extra cash for gifts this holiday season, Twitter scams offer dangerous links to high-paying, work-at-home jobs that ask for your personal information, such as your e-mail address, home address and Social Security number, to apply for the fake job.
Smishing. Cybercrooks are now "smishing," or sending phishing SMS texts. These texts appear to come from your bank or an online retailer saying that there is something wrong with an account and you have to call a number to verify your account information. In reality, these efforts are merely a ruse to extract valuable personal information from the targets.
Cybercrooks know that people are more vulnerable to this scam during the holiday season when they're doing more online shopping and checking bank balances frequently.
NEW YORK – If you’re looking for the best price on a holiday gift: there's an app for that. Tech guru and senior editor of CNET Dan Ackerman says just use your Smartphone or tablet computer.
"Now you can actually be in the store and do online comparison shopping and see if it's cheaper across the street or across town,” Ackerman says.
Dozens of shopping apps, short for application, can be downloaded onto your handheld device. This year they are more sophisticated than ever. Shopsavvy and Redlaser turn a Smartphone’s camera into a barcode scanner. In a few seconds the app shows how much the product is selling for online and at nearby stores.
If it’s a CD, book or DVD and you are using the "Snap Tel" app, you don’t even need the bar code. Just take a picture of the cover and the program will tell you if it's cheaper somewhere else.
"And you save money, whenever you can save money, that's good," shopper Mercedes Salas says.
But if you’re not in a store, there are apps that can find discounts nearby. Even Facebook has one, that can show stores that are having a sale near you.
Several big retailers are also using Shopkick, an app that helps the bargains find you. As soon as you walk into a store the app starts sending discount offers to your phone. You can also find out more about a big ticket item by taking a picture of designated symbol.
"If you scan one of those it will take you to a detailed website that has a detailed product page for that exact item," Ackerman says.
More than half of all Smartphone users say they plan to use their devices to navigate the busy holiday season. That is twice as many as last year. Almost all of the apps are free and most popular stores have their own apps that tell shoppers about deals and discounts. Read more...

Are you single? Has it been a long time since you had a fulfilling relationship? Well - good news! - chances are things will pick up for you in 2011. New Years Day: Getting Acquainted
On New Year's Day, the emotional Moon conjoins Venus, planet of love, in sexy Scorpio, and both of them form a beautiful trine with Jupiter, planet of joy and happiness, and Uranus, planet of luck, in mystical and romantic Pisces. Therefore, if you're already in a committed relationship, you and your partner will grow closer together, and will discover wonderful things about each other. If you're single and hoping for a new love partner, someone nice is out there for you. You just need to make the effort to find him/her. For those who are dating, you could learn surprising new things about a love interest that you have not realized until now. Spring Equinox: Radiating Love
The Spring Equinox brings another very positive planetary connection. The emotional Moon will be in Libra, the sign of love relationships and marriage, and will form a beautiful trine to Venus, planet of love, and Neptune, planet of romance, in altruistic Aquarius. Furthermore, Saturn, co-ruler of Aquarius, is also in Libra, forming a mutual reception with Venus, ruler of Libra, in Aquarius. This not only implies that romance is going to blossom, but that your love extends to the rest of the world - which can make you and your partner very happy. If you're single, under this aspect the best way for you to meet someone nice would be to get involved with humanitarian causes. This will not only help you find a partner, but help those in need. Summer Solstice: Deepening Connections
High summer comes with the Summer Solstice on June 22. The Sun in Cancer trines the sensitive Moon and romantic Neptune in mystical Pisces. Venus, planet of love, and Mars, planet of desire, are both in Gemini trine Saturn, planet of permanence and commitment (in Libra). Existing relationships will be strengthened, and new relationships are very likely to last for a long time. The involvement of Neptune indicates a mystical and karmic bond between most couples, as well as the ability to sense what the other is thinking. Don't, however, tell your partner what you're picking up from him/her - at least, not most of the time! Fall Equinox: Mixed Bag
The Fall Equinox finds Venus conjunct both the Sun and Saturn - implying that whether or not a couple has just met, or has been together for a long time, most relationships will grow and thrive, but fall may not be quite as bright and stimulating as spring. Still, the turning of the leaves and the nip in the air can be inspiring and stimulating. Take some long walks in the brisk air of fall. If you're single, you just might encounter someone who, like you, is looking for a partner. The committed will enjoy such walks as well - as well as getting back home. You're looking forward to the holidays, and could already be making plans for 2012. Read more...
Want to escape those winter blues on a budget? We've searched everywhere to find the best locations where smart travelers can save top dollar.
Our top five off-peak destinations for this winter include options across the globe, from lesser-known ski areas to temperate climates to hot cultural spots.
This winter marks an especially good time to visit Philly. Besides the always-popular Independence Hall, visitors can tour a slew of new art exhibits that are slated to commence this winter. The brand new, one-of-a-kind National Museum of American Jewish History will open to the public on November 26. And the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Picasso and the Avant-Garde in Paris exhibit will open February 24, while, a collaboration between the City of Philadelphia and the National Park Service, President's House: Freedom and Slavery in the Making of a New Nation, is expected to open in mid-December.
Food lovers will want to visit during Center City Restaurant Week in January, when more than 100 restaurants offer prix fixe menus at bargain prices. And if that's not enough, there are holiday festivities throughout the city, such as tree lightings in Rittenhouse Square and at City Hall, the Holiday Light Show and Dickens Village at Macy's, and the unique Mummers Parade on New Year's Day.
If your travel aspirations are a little more far-flung, consider Morocco this winter. Summertime weather and holidays result in crowded streets and higher prices, making winter a quieter and less expensive time to go. Plus, temperatures tend to be very mild, though the varying climates allow for skiing in the Atlas Mountains and swimming in Agadir. Plus, you can explore medieval architecture in the capital city of Marrakech or go ultra-modern at relaxing Casablanca spas.
What is the Xbox 360 console with Kinect? The Xbox Kinect is the newest invention from the Microsoft Xbox team.
There was a time when Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo’s two main video game competitors, scoffed at the user interface of the Wii. Particularly, the way the player’s movements control the motion on the screen, but that have changed recently. The Kinect for the Xbox 360 promises to bring these technologies to the next level. The Kinect sensor allows you to play games and engage with your Xbox 360 console in ways we haven’t seen before and it is a lot of fun as well.
Just like the Nintendo Wii, the Xbox 360 console with Kinect makes use of a sensor bar to find out wherever a player is, and what they are doing. However, the Wii still needs the use of a controller (both hand-held, or a foot board). The Kinect, on the other side, gets rid of the controller all together. Instead, it uses a number of unique proprietary sensors within the bar, which includes the camera and sound detection. There is additionally facial recognition software to let the unit “see” who is playing. Simply because there is no longer a controller, players interact with games by making various gestures or with voice commands. Because Kinect users multiple cameras to track your movements, it is very precise.
The Kinect can be obtained as an add-on if you have any model of Xbox 360 which supports it. But you can also buy a new Xbox 360 console with Kinect system which includes the sensor bar. You can choose from two bundles:
The decision is yours, but it may be a smarter idea to get a total new console to make certain there are no compatibility issues. Read more at http://xbox360consolewithkinect.com/.
TAMPA - As you do your Thanksgiving shopping, you might be tantalized by all the deals in those splashy holiday supermarket displays.
But, a little discretion could save you money.
The Tribune visited the big supermarket chains this week and found you can often find cheaper store-brand items on the supermarkets' regular shelves.
Tribune reporters fanned out across the Tampa Bay area this week to look at Thanksgiving displays at Publix, Sweetbay, Winn-Dixie, Wal-Mart Supercenter and Super Target. Generally, it didn't appear the grocery stores were trying to pull a fast one on shoppers.
There were some legitimate deals on hand, even if the less flashy store-brand items on the regular shelves were cheaper. National-brand items appear to have been marked down, and in many cases, supermarkets were offering buy-one-get-one-free deals on Thanksgiving staples.
Winn-Dixie, for example, offered a 14-ounce can of Swanson chicken broth for $1.25. You can get a second can for free if you have a Winn-Dixie membership card. It also offered a 4.7-ounce box of Betty Crocker scalloped potatoes for $1.99. Again, it's 2-for-1 if you have a Winn-Dixie card. Read more...
General Motors took a big step away from the "Government Motors" moniker Thursday as it returned to life as a public company in North America's largest initial public offering worth US$23 billion.

GM set a price of US$33 per common share on Wednesday, at the high end of a range that had already been increased once due to early investor demand for the shares.
"It is a great today for everyone with a stake in GM: employees, retirees, dealers, suppliers, taxpayers and yes, new shareholders," GM chief executive Dan Akerson told a conference call with reporters Thursday morning.
"Going public is an important milestone on our way to being a new and different and better GM."
The U.S. government, the Canadian federal and Ontario governments and other owners raised a total of US$18.2 billion by selling at the IPO price. GM raised another US$5 billion by selling 100 million preferred shares at US$50 each. Read more...

Want a great deal on a Mercedes? Now's the time to jump. This month the German carmaker is offering its dealers $10,000 in marketing support to help them clear out the last of the 2010 S-class sedans. If and when they pass that savings on to you, you can save a bundle on the outgoing model.
You'll pass up a couple of cool new safety features found on the 2011 model--lane departure warning and blind-spot detection--but the savings might be worth it to you. The base sticker price on the 2010 S550 is $91,600. Assuming you're a decent negotiator and the dealer is willing to pass on that $10,000 incentive, you can drive it home for well under $80,000. Under cabinet television become more popular than ever and no wonder. The TV no longer stalls as a solitary piece of furniture but has turn into a main attraction of many other rooms in the house. And kitchen is just one of them.
Women traditionally spend more time in the kitchen than men, so placing the TV in the kitchen makes sense. Working in the kitchen whether cooking, cleaning or doing other household chores makes the job that much more enjoyable. But flip down kitchen TV can be enjoyed by the other family members as well.
Under cabinet television have become very popular in recent years, not only for the room they save in the house but because these televisions have advanced into high quality models. The technology used in these rather small, convenient units is amazing. They are ranging from plain, simple televisions to units including built-in DVD/CD player, AM/FM digital radio and the clock.
How to choose the best under cabinet TV?
The major factor in choosing an under cabinet television is the size. The unit should be small enough for the space you are using and large enough for you to enjoy viewing. Deciding between a unit with a swivel mount and one that is stationary is also important. If you wish to view the television from different areas of the room, a swivel mount is the best option.

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) - Avril Lavigne's fourth studio album is finally getting closer to a release date.
The follow up to 2007's "The Best Damn Thing" has been mired in delays, though it's been finished for well over a year.
In a letter to her fans, Lavigne slammed her record label, RCA, for holding up the music.
"This has been a really difficult record for me to create and to release," she wrote. "Not only is this the most meaningful and special record I have written, it is sincere, honest and close to my heart."
Lavigne continued: "For the first time I experienced a bunch of bureaucratic BS...People do their best work when they are doing what they want, love and is natural for them, not when you are forcing them to be something that they are not."
No release date has been set, though Lavigne mentioned that the album's first single, called "What the Hell," will be out in January 2011. Read more..
Before you head into the final stretch before the holiday rush, when stores lose all subtlety in the ways they push gift-buying, you may wonder whether to pass up November bargains in the hope that some prices will keep falling.
Last year, most customers who waited until the final days before Dec. 25 found empty shelves instead of bargains because stores had sold most of their stock, and so didn't have to cut prices to clear out holiday merchandise.
This year, most stores are heading into the holidays with only a little more inventory, so again few are desperate. But many are discounting holiday goods earlier than last year because shoppers remain cautious.
Generally, "retailers are going out with their best prices of the season around the Thanksgiving week," says John Long, a retail strategist at Kurt Salmon Associates.
Here are some tips for timing your purchases this year.

WHEN interest rates are rising, it pays home buyers and savers to look beyond the big banks
Beating the banks in a higher interest rate environment is tough but experts say there are strategies homeowners and depositors can employ that will save them more money or deliver greater returns.
The first and most important strategy is to shop around.
If you are a mortgage holder, experts say you should be doing your research now to find better deals, as further interest rate rises are expected in the year ahead. But if you are a depositor, the higher interest rate environment is in your favour, with better deals likely to come in the new year.
Last week the Reserve bank of Australia raised the official cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.75 per cent.
On the same day, the Commonwealth Bank lifted its standard variable rate by 25 basis points above the cash rate, and at the time of writing other banks were expected to follow. Read more...

At first glance, the rules may seem a bit complicated, but are easily understood after a few rounds. Basically, players sit across from each other and place Bakugan Gate Cards on the battle board. Then each player, in turn, rolls their Bakugan onto the board. If the Bakugan rolls over a gate card it opens automatically and is ready for battle. Players have three Bakugan Battle Brawlers, three Gate Cards, and three Ability Cards each. Advanced players may also add one trap to make for more exciting play. Each Brawler has a point value. Gate cards add to that value depending on the type of Bakugan that is on the card. There is something wonderful about taking a tired old bathroom and making it seem bright and shiny once again. Most people, however, cringe at the thought of a bathroom remodel fearing the absolute worst when it comes to their financial situation once all is said and done. The good news is that small steps can lead to big changes in rooms as small as bathrooms.
Decorating your bathroom with seashell decor is one of the options you can use. There is so many seashell accessories to choose from you won't have a problem to make your old bathroom to look like new. But before you start accessorizing take a look at what you can do to refresh your bathroom. My suggestion with a bathroom is to assess where the worst blemishes and eyesores may be. Painting the walls can be a good place to start .
