Ah, credit cards…like a magical piece of plastic that gives you license to take things home from the store — you'll worry about paying for them later, right?!
Sorry to wake you from your dreaming, sweetheart, but not only should you pay for those items sooner rather than later, you may be paying a premium for the privilege of using that little piece of plastic heaven. To add to your spending confusion, there are just so many choices these days.
Yes, modern credit cards come in a huge range of styles and flavours. Some have annual fees; others don't. Interest rates range from five percent…to 25 per cent (uh oh). There are insurance features to choose from, cash-back options and myriad reward programs. Oh yeah, and like your iPad Smart Cover, they come in yummy colours like gold, platinum and breast cancer pink.
So what's a smart credit cardista to do? Start by asking yourself these questions.
1. Are you a shopaholic? For most people, the purpose of the credit card (as our Italian nonna would say) is to make-a the shopping. If you tend to spend a lot on your card every month, you might as well get a little something-something for every purchase you make, whether it's airline miles, warranty protection or other benefits.

In AT&T Deal, Bankers Guaranteed To Benefit As Consumers And Shareholders Hope For Best
Eleven years ago, at the height of the telecom bubble, Deutsche Telekom paid about $51 billion for one of America's smallest national cell phone companies, hoping to gain entry into the burgeoning U.S. market.
On Monday, the German giant announced it's selling the offspring of that deal -- T-Mobile USA -- to AT&T for $39 billion.
That 2000 investment -- now worth about 40 percent less after adjusting for inflation -- has cost Deutsche Telekom and its shareholders dearly. The benefits for the American public, which were widely touted at the time as the German company fought for regulatory approval, are debatable.
But the bankers on those deals sure made a killing. And while it remains to be seen whether the same purported "synergies" and "cost savings" that were peddled in 2000 will ultimately benefit AT&T's shareholders who are being promised the same thing, bankers once again are poised to strike it rich. Bankers' fees will roll in regardless of whether their advice will ultimately benefit their clients.
"When you look at investment bankers, their job is to put buyer and seller together," said Matt McCormick, a portfolio manager at Bahl & Gaynor, which oversees about $3.2 billion. "Much like a real estate broker, if you're trying to buy a house, does the broker really care if you're in a ranch, or a two-story home, or with a pool or not? They are only paid if a deal gets done."

In analyzing current nationwide incentives, we've found some enticing discounts on good models. Locally, you may find additional sales deals being advertised. And being near the end of the month, dealers may be a bit more willing to negotiate to meet their quotas.
Those highlighted below have Bottom Line Prices well below MSRP, when factoring all national incentives. Regional or local offers, as well as bonus incentives that are targeted at specific audiences such as military personnel or college graduates, may further sweeten the deal. The Bottom Line Price gives you a strong starting point for your negotiations, working up from the rock bottom, rather than haggling down from MSRP or even advertised offers.
The models listed below are just a few of our Best New Car Deals—notable discounts on models recommended by Consumer Reports. These vehicles scored well in our testing, have average or better predicted reliability, and performed well in government or insurance-industry safety tests, if evaluated.
The best foods for a long life
What you eat can affect your health and your longevity. Find out which foods experts say we should enjoy for a long life -- and which ones to avoid. Why are some people “old” at age 70 while others are “young” at 90? Experts have different theories about why we age, but they agree we can influence the process. Longevity isn’t just about delaying death — it’s about enjoying more years of health and vitality. Diet is one of the lifestyle choices we can make to slow down the aging process and delay the onset of age-related chronic illnesses.
How, exactly? The body needs a variety of nutrients to keep its systems — like our immune system and endocrine system (which regulates hormones) — running at their best. However, our diet does more than just provide fuel. In her new book, The Longevity Diet, dietician Leslie Beck outlines the ways food choices affect the aging process.
First, certain foods can cause or prevent inflammation in the body. We’re not just talking arthritis — chronic inflammation also contributes to illnesses like Alzheimer’s disease, heart attack and type 2 diabetes. Foods that are high in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, monounsaturated fat and phytochemicals promote the production of anti-inflammatory compounds. In contrast, foods which are high in fat, refined sugars and refined starches can promote inflammation. (See Can food fight inflammation? for more details.)
The best - and worst - used cars
Consumer Reports - Consumer ReportsSavvy car buyers know that the best way to get the most vehicle for their money is to buy a used car. With the average new car losing 47 percent of its value in the first three years, buying used is an affordable way to get the safety and comfort features you want at a far better price.
The Best of the best list guides you to the 2001 to 2010 models that scored well in our road tests when new and have been consistently reliable over time. Each has achieved multiple years of above-average used-car verdicts (available to subscribers), indicating that owners have had relatively few problems.
Models built by Toyota and Honda dominate the list once again, and many of the best used vehicles are from Asian manufacturers. But high-quality vehicles are available from domestic and European automakers as well.
Best move-in deals
Content That WorksBuying a home starts a ripple of purchases, from signing for cable to hooking up with the electric company.
A little time spent reviewing economical choices can have a big pay-off. “Anything you can do to reduce your costs means you’ll save each month,” explains Jim Chilsen of the Citizens Utility Board, a Chicago-based consumer advocacy group
Here, some guidance on making affordable choices:
Lighten up utilities
About two weeks before you move, contact electric and gas utilities, making sure the final bill is sent to the current owners, says Chilsen, so that you aren’t handed bills the seller actually incurred. Ask that your first bill be based on an actual meter reading, Chilsen adds, to avoid estimated charges based on the seller’s usage. More details on setting up utilities are offered at Chilsen’s site, www.citizensutilityboard.org.

Are spa weeks a good deal?
ATLANTA -- If you need some stress relief or some pampering, there are some discounts coming up, but not all of them are the best deals available.
Spas and some fitness centers are holding two competing joint marketing campaigns: Spa Finder Wellness Week is March 21-27, then a different event, Spa Week will be held April 11-17. Spa Week began in New York in 2004.
"Spa Week is a week when various spas in multiple cities across the United States offer specials to give price breaks to the average consumer to attract new clientele," said Celia Tully, Markering Director and Partner in Metro Atlanta's Natural Body Spas. Natural Body Spas are offering facials and massages that retail for $80 and $85 for $50.
What you should know before you donate
How can you help when a natural disaster strikes? What you should know before you donate.
When disaster strikes, it doesn’t take long for images of suffering to span the globe — not to mention the appeals for help. If you want to help but aren’t sure how or whom to contact, we’ve got the answers.
What is the best way to donate?
Talk to any government or aid organization and they will tell you the same thing: The best way to help is to donate money to an experienced humanitarian organization.
Why? In simplest terms, it’s the fastest and most efficient way to get help to those who need it most. An experienced organization is better able to assess the needs of victims and find the most cost-effective means to purchase and distribute essential items like food, water and medicine. In many cases supplies can be purchased locally at a lower cost, which supports the affected economy as well as helping your cash go farther.
In contrast, donated goods such as clothing and food may not be appropriate for the climate or culture, and the costs of sorting, shipping and distributing them can be high. Add in concerns about fumigation (like bed bugs) and import regulations and it’s not hard to see how supply lines can get clogged. Some items could end up turned away at the border.
Donating goods can be an effective strategy when the crisis is close to you or there are calls for specific items for a devastated area. For example, your used clothing may not be appropriate for a victim of a cyclone in Asia, but may be welcomed by the victim of a fire or flood in your area. Collected items can also be sold through a community garage sale or auction with the proceeds going to charity.

7 sweet gadgets that can save you money
At first glance, these just-for-fun items seem like complete money-sinks. You buy them when you have extra cash, when you have a gift card, or for a special occasion. Then, after a few years, you upgrade. Many people covet the new gadgets they see online, in magazines, in stores, and everywhere in between, but when it's time to sit down and finalize that purchase, rationality gets the best of us, leaving each of us to ask ourselves:
"Do I really need this?"
More often than not, we can't justify an answer of yes, so we say no. After a few luxurious moments of browsing, we pay our bills, close the internet browser, or walk out of the store thinking, "maybe next month." Then, next month creeps up on us with broken cars, plumbing problems and sick kids. How in the world can we ever feel good about our pricey gadgets when the expenses keep piling up?
This article will show you how to think about your gadgets in a new light. Believe it or not, your favorite wish-list toppers can help you save money in ways that you never expected. Need some convincing? Here goes:
1. Your Smartphone
With a new or upgraded cell phone plan, a smartphone comes at a price of around $200. For a phone, that's a lot of money to spend, especially when you consider your monthly voice, data and text bills. Even though these costs are scary, your smartphone can actually help you save. For one, a smartphone gives you instant access to the internet when you're out shopping, so wherever you are, you can compare prices for a better deal. Plus, you can check your bank account and track your spending from absolutely everywhere. Some of our favorite apps include RedLaser, which turns your phone into a bar code scanner; USAA, which allows users to deposit a check via smartphone; Keyring, which organizes reward club cards in one place; Grocery IQ, which keeps track of shopping lists and coupons; and Scoutmob, which explores restaurant and event deals.

The best wine deals, 4 March 2011
Muriel Reserva Rioja 2005 Spain (13%, £5.99 down from £9.99 when you buy two, Majestic)
An oak-driven Spanish red – this wine has spent two years in French and American wood and you can certainly taste it – that’s had time to mellow into a spicy, rich wine that tastes almost as if it’s been pre-mulled, it’s so full of cloves, mace and bay flavours. The oak falls into balance as soon as you put it with food – say, lamb covered in herbs or a sticky, slow-cooked oxtail casserole.
Paul Mas Marsanne 2009 Pays d’Oc, France (13%, £7.74, Asda)
Marsanne is a white grape from the northern Rhône that is edging back into fashion as a single varietal and a jolly good thing that is too. This example is succulent and tangy, as if tinged with orange and clementine zest and a touch of almond blossom. It’s also delicious with firm fish – think swordfish steaks marinated in citrus.
IPad 2 launch date puts RIM at risk: analysts
Apple's March 11 launch date for the iPad 2 makes the release of the BlackBerry Playbook the following month risky — despite RIM's dominance in the corporate market, analysts say.
RIM unveiled its soon-to-launch tablet computer last September in an effort to compete with Apple's popular iPad. However, technology watchers are questioning the Playbook's chances of success in the market after Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the new version of the iPad and announced its imminent launch at a media event earlier this week.
In the mobile space, Research in Motion's legacy as a developer of a secure and well-encrypted platform guarantees the company significant market share. However according to technology market analysts, marketing tablet computers will be a new challenge for the Waterloo, Ont.-based company as it prepare to launch the Playbook in April.
"RIM has an advantage in terms of security with corporations … but [the IT industry] has not yet embraced tablets,” said market analyst Rob Enderle of Enderle Group. "As a result, the Playbook may not get a lot of play.”
Enderle is joined by other observers in his skepticism. Philip Redman, research vice-president at Gartner Research, hopes that more will become clear as RIM's release date nears.
Tweet for good travel deals
Published: Monday, Mar. 7, 2011 - 5:09 amLast Modified: Monday, Mar. 7, 2011 - 5:46 pmAirlines, hotels and other travel companies have moved beyond their own websites to promote travel, and you can find some great deals through social-networking sites. These companies are trying to increase their following by offering special deals, promotions and general news using sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
At Bestfares.com, we post stories and deals on our website and also to Twitter, Facebook and our blog. We've found Twitter to be a better tool than e-mail for spreading the word about Snooze You Lose, those short-lived sales we find, because we can get the word out quickly.
Some of the best Snooze You Lose fares are a result of mistakes made by the airlines, and those mistakes have been widespread since January.
A couple of weeks ago, Delta mistakenly entered fares from Dallas to almost anywhere in Europe for under $400 round trip, including taxes and fees, and most fares were under $360 round trip.
It would have taken three hours to get the word out to everyone on our e-mail list, which was about how long the fares lasted, but we were able to notify travelers in moments via Twitter.
Microsoft's Deals service won't work on WP7 phones
Social shopping service will work with Bing, plus Apple and Android devices.
Microsoft Corp. doesn't appear to be a fan of Windows Phone 7.
On Thursday, the software giant said it was launching a social shopping service called Deals that would work with its Bing search engine. Deals also runs on mobile devices, such as Apple Inc.'s iOS and Google Inc.'s Android operating systems, so shoppers on the go can make sure they're getting the best price available.
One curious omission: Deals doesn't work with Windows Phone 7, the latest version of Microsoft's mobile OS.
');}A Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed via email that WP7 didn't currently support Deals, but that the software would be updated later this year to accommodate the shopping service.
Microsoft acknowledged the issue on its Bing Community blog. A post signed by "the big team" thanked users for their feedback but said WP7 wouldn't support Deals until the phone software is updated.
WP7's failure to support Deals comes as the world's largest maker of computer software scrambles to respond to a computing market that is rapidly shifting to mobile devices. While many of its products, such as the Windows operating system and Office suite of productivity software, rule desktops and laptops, the Redmond, Wash.-based company has made little headway in the world of smartphones and tablet devices.
Hop on the Snowbus for one of the best ski deals around
We're at the top of the Breezeway chairlift at Monarch Mountain for a long-standing tradition: A group run with the skiers and snowboarders who have ridden here together through the pre-dawn darkness on a bus from Colorado Springs, Colo.
Bruce Fanning started doing this in the 1980s. Other traditions associated with the bus rides have fallen by the wayside, most notably the drinking, smoking and rowdiness that, according to legend, once led the state patrol to send an undercover trooper on one of the trips.
"Back then the buses were out of control," said Fanning with a laugh.
But the group run down the mountain, like the bus trip itself, endures.
Great deal on wheels
Every other Sunday during the heart of ski season, the Snowbus rolls out of town at 6:30 a.m.
Radio station 94.3 KILO organizes the trips. In exchange for on-air promotion, Monarch provides the lift tickets, and Mom's County Kitchen provides lunches.
The riders' $45-a-head price pays for the bus, driver, gas and insurance, said KILO marketing director and DJ Zakk, who goes by his first name only.
Tickets go on sale about two weeks ahead of time and sell out quickly.
Zakk said KILO could probably fill more buses.
Top Tips On Finding The Best Fixed Rate Mortgage Deals
If you’re thinking of applying for a mortgage, you don’t have to let the struggling economy deter you – especially when taking advantage of fixed rate deals that will protect you from inflation. The best deals may not always come your way though, which is where doing your research beforehand can really pay off.
There are many things you need to look for when comparing mortgages, to ensure you’re getting the best deal available. The advantage of a fixed rate mortgage is that your monthly payments will remain fixed for a set time – whether it’s two, five or ten years – but this could also prove to be a disadvantage if you aren’t careful to establish a sufficiently low interest rate from the onset. There are also other costs to consider, such as lender and broker fees, and these need to be factored into your budget.
Improving your credit rating could help you greatly in securing lower interest rates, as your credit score gives lenders a fairly accurate view of your risk factor. There are many well-publicised ways to boost your credit score even in a relatively short period of time, such as opening a range of credit card accounts and other loans and ensuring you pay them off in full each month. It’s never a good idea to lie about your credit rating though, as lenders are likely to check for themselves, and may refuse you a loan if you were found to be dishonest.
Apple's Jobs Says iPad 2 Makes It Official: PC Era is Done
On the occasion of the launch of the second generation of Apple’s iPad tablet, CEO Steve Jobs essentially declared the end of the two-decade PC era.
“These are post-PC devices that need to be even easier to use than the PC, and even more intuitive,” Jobs said at the end of Wednesday’s iPad 2 launch event in San Francisco, using the phrase “post-PC” a dozen or so times in reflecting on the year since Apple (NSDQ:AAPL - News) once again put the PC and consumer electronics industries on notice with the launch of the original iPad. Just like the iPhone in 2007, the iPad is quickly showing that people are finally ready for a more intimate computing experience than the one provided by their laptops but now, they want it in an easier to read and use package than a smartphone.
Apple shipped 15 million iPads in the 9 months following its March shipping date through the close of the year. That’s “more than every Tablet PC ever sold,” Jobs cracked, referring to Microsoft’s failed attempt to drive a similar idea into the computer industry a decade ago with its Tablet PC software. Ten years ago the hardware simply wasn’t capable of providing a lightweight computing experience, and Microsoft’s pen-based user interface wasn’t all that popular outside the hardcore geek crowd.
But now all the planets are aligning around lightweight 9-inch-or-so screens that can go all day on a single battery charge and fit comfortably in a purse or backpack. These devices are also allowing software developers and designers to break free their reliance on the keyboard (based on the 19-century typewriter) and mouse input devices to a more natural series of buttons, gestures, and even voice commands. Jobs talked about the dawn of this “post-PC era” last year at the D: All Things Digital conference, but offered numbers and evidence Wednesday that suggests we’re already there.
There’s nothing particularly notable about the iPad 2 as compared to the original. Sure, it’s thinner, faster, and more capable than the original, but it’s basically the same device in terms of what it allows the user to accomplish (modest exceptions such as iMovie and GarageBand aside).
But what it does do is cement Apple’s reputation as the catalyst for this “post-PC” era.

RRSP Myth #2: Annual RRSP deductions are mandatory
So this myth often gets in the way of young people who aren't yet making a ton of money starting down the right road. Since they believe they have to claim the deduction, and they're in a low tax bracket, they don't see the point in using an RRSP and opt instead for a TFSA, the newer kid on the block.
While many people do take the deduction for their RRSP contribution from the get-go, there's no rule that says you can't hold off. In fact, holding off makes sense when you'll end up getting more money back from the Tax Man by delaying your deduction gratification. So if you're just starting out and earning not-so-much, don't bother claiming the deduction… save 'em up until you're in a higher tax bracket when you'll get a bigger bang for your buck.
Life changes are another reason to pause and think… Think…THINK…Take the case of a woman who goes off on maternity leave in the middle of the year. Since her income is dramatically reduced for that year, her marginal tax rate will also be lower. Claiming the deduction for her RRSP would mean frittering away a perfectly good deduction on a low-income year. Better to hold the deduction for a year when her taxable income is back up. Then, even though her RRSP contribution limit would be less (based on the previous year's earned income, which may have been smaller because she was on mat leave), giving her little room to maneuver when trying to minimize her taxes, her undeducted contribution from the previous year will come in very handy.
Whether you're having a baby, just starting off in your career, taking a year off to get an MBA or planning a sabbatical -- knowing you can delay claiming your deduction without losing it means you can plan to make those RRSP contributions work even harder in terms of the deduction you'll eventually receive. They also eliminate the excuse, "What's the point, I don't pay that much tax now anyway."
