Presenting the sixth installment of Yahoo! Canada's Year in Review, our team of editors pored over more than one billion queries to offer a look at the people, stories and trends that dominated the year.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the Vancouver Winter Games took the top position. Impressive is that for an event which lasted a few weeks last winter, it still dominated all others stories to rank No. 1. Canadians pulled out their red mittens to showcase their national pride. During those 16 days, our athletes impressed us winning 14 gold medals, the most of any other participating country, including our first on home snow. Canada defended its name as a hockey powerhouse in both the women's event and a nail-biting gold finish for the men. But the high points also came with some lows. A luge competitor died in a terrible accident while on a practice run before mere hours before the Opening Ceremony.

South Africa, the first African nation to host the FIFA World Cup of Soccer, welcomed 32 nations in the world's largest sporting event. People took an online crash course in the sport, learning about the rules of the game, the major players (and outrageous referees), the octopus oracle, and super-cool (or was that super-annoying?) native horns that just wouldn't quit.
